How to Reupholster a Square Ottoman

If you have an old ottoman in great condition, you can make it match your room style and furniture by changing its upholstery. You do not need to throw away some furniture pieces because they can be easily renovated to match the other furniture parts.

If this is a case with a square ottoman with a good construction and opening mechanism, you can refresh it by reupholstering it with a new fabric. And you can do it at home.

A square ottoman is much simpler to reupholster because its shape allows us to do it perfectly. Just buy the fabric of your choice and get the needed tools to remove the old and place the new upholstery. Ensure the fabric is flat and tightened up well during the process, especially if the fabric you have chosen has a print or strips.

To secure the fabric, you can use a staple gun or hot fabric glue. Both ways are simple and will take almost no time to reupholster the ottoman. Ask for help if you are not sure you can do the job on your own.

Begin the renovation by removing all parts, attachments, and mechanisms from the ottoman. Put the legs and screws in a safe place so you would not lose them.

Needed materials and tools

  • Upholstery fabric
  • Fabric marker
  • Scissors
  • Measure tape
  • Staple gun and staples
  • Screwdriver
  • Foam (optional)

Step 1

Remove the seat, legs, and other attachments from the ottoman. Place the top and bottom ottoman parts on the fabric and measure their surface to see how much fabric length you will need and how to cut the fabric to use a good part of it effectively.

Step 2

With the screwdriver, remove the staples from the current ottoman upholstery. The removed fabric can be used in step 2 for precise fabric measures. The removed upholstery fabric can be a perfect template for the new fabric dimensions measurement.

Step 3

Get the fabric marker and line the parts on the fabric, leaving a few centimeters to the side just in case you need an extra length. Cut the fabric and separate the top and bottom pieces. If you decide to add a new foam layer on the ottoman seat, you need to leave extra length for the top fabric.

Step 4

Start attaching the new upholstery fabric. Place the foam (optional) on the ottoman seat and wrap it with the seat fabric. Tighten up the fabric and check if it is placed straight and well.

Pull the fabric to the seat and start stapling it. Cut or fold the corners and secure them with two or more staples. If the fabric is thick, it is best to make a small cut on the corners and staple them without folding.

Step 5

Finish the bottom the same way and secure the parts you have removed in the beginning. Do not forget to make precise holes on the bottom fabric where you have to put the screws for the ottoman legs back on.

Optional: if you decide to add a new foam to the ottoman seat, you can make an upholstered pattern on the top to add a more luxurious look.

Reupholster a square ottoman using a hot fabric glue

Needed materials and tools

  • Upholstery fabric
  • Fabric marker
  • Measure tape
  • Scissors
  • Fabric glue
  • Screwer

Step 1

The first step requires separating the top and bottom of the ottoman. This will help you make proper measures and simplify the reupholstering process.

Step 2

With the screwdriver, remove the staples from the current upholstery. If the old upholstery is glued with fabric glue, try pulling it out or get a utility knife to separate the fabric from the seat. Be careful with the process, and try not to hurt yourself.

Step 3

The removed fabric can be a perfect template for measuring the new fabric dimensions. Mark the new upholstery parts with the fabric marker, and keep in mind to leave a few centimeters just in case.

Step 4

Place the new fabric on the ottoman’s parts and add fabric glue to stick the fabric to the wooden construction. Press the glued place for a few seconds to help the fabric stick to the wood. When you are done with gluing the fabric, add something heavier to put pressure on the glued parts and help the glue dry out completely. It is best to leave it overnight.

Step 5

Put the ottoman’s legs in place and secure them with the screws. Add the attachments and details you removed in the first step, and voila! You have a completely new ottoman that fits into your place.
